This Color Will Always Have My Heart (And My Lens)

the enduring allure

As a recent bride and a wedding photographer rooted in documentary storytelling with a soft editorial edge, I’ve spent countless hours wrapped in the world of weddings — behind the lens, and most recently, walking down the aisle myself. One element I’ve always been captivated by, both as a creative and a bride, is the ivory wedding gown.

There’s something undeniably timeless and elegant about ivory. It's a hue that never demands attention but always commands it.

A Color With History and Heart

While Queen Victoria's choice of a white gown in 1840 popularized white wedding dresses, shades like ivory have long held a place in bridal fashion. After Victoria’s wedding, white became the standard for royalty and the wealthy, symbolizing purity and opulence. But white fabrics were expensive and hard to maintain, especially in the pre-industrial laundry age, so many brides chose ivory, cream, or champagne gowns instead — hues that mimicked white but were far more forgiving and accessible. In the early 20th century, particularly during the 1940s, ivory gowns were favored for their understated elegance and practicality during times of fabric rationing during the war. It became common to borrow or repurpose ivory gowns — sometimes even dyeing dresses back to ivory from other hues. It was a smart, elegant solution in a time when nothing went to waste.

In the mid-20th century, as Hollywood glamour influenced bridal fashion, ivory gowns made frequent appearances in silk satin and taffeta. These materials draped effortlessly and reflected the warm tones of studio lighting, giving brides that soft, screen-siren glow.

The Photographic Charm of Ivory

If you're leaning toward a more heirloom-inspired wedding aesthetic, this is the color that translates soulfully into photos. From a photographer’s perspective — especially one who works with 120 and 35mm film — ivory gowns are the ultimate canvas. On film, this color carries light and shadow beautifully. It’s warm without being yellow, and soft without flattening detail. Whether you choose liquid satin, silk satin, or taffeta, the textures in ivory hold a subtle, buttery hue that brings depth and dimension to your wedding photos. It gives old-world romance.

Ivory tones also tend to photograph more authentically across diverse skin tones, capturing warmth and contrast in a way bright white sometimes misses. Through sun-drenched vineyards, cloudy afternoons, and candlelit evenings — ivory stays luminous and romantic through every frame.

Modern Trends: The Resurgence of Classic Silhouettes

Now, we’re seeing a resurgence, not just in color but in silhouette. Today's bridal fashion sees a revival of vintage-inspired silhouettes, with basque waist and drop waist gowns making a notable comeback. These styles, when rendered in ivory, exude a refined elegance that bridges the gap between classic and contemporary. The basque waist, with its elongated bodice and flared skirt, and the drop waist, which elongates the torso before flaring out, both offer flattering profiles that celebrate the bride's form.

A Personal Reflection

Choosing an ivory gown for my own wedding was an ode to both tradition and personal style. The hue complemented the natural tones of our venue and added a gentle layer of wardrobe warmth to our photographs that I cherish deeply. For brides seeking a gown that embodies timeless elegance while offering a unique twist on tradition, ivory stands out as a compelling choice. And now, every time I photograph a bride in ivory, it brings me back to that feeling — timeless, grounded, and full of beauty.

If you’re a bride who values intentionality, design, and emotion in every part of your wedding day, consider the beauty of ivory. It's a color that doesn’t just look incredible — it feels meaningful, too.
